Penne vs. Waterson Announced for InvictaFC 5; Promotion Heading West Coast

On the heels of a successful InvictaFC 4, Shannon Knapp is already starting to stack the deck for their fifth card; with the promotion looking to move the event to sunny California.

Thursday, Knapp told MMA Junkie she is targeting an April date in Irvine, CA for the next InvictaFC event. This will be the first time the event will move out of Kansas City.

The main event will feature atomweight champ Jessica Penne defending her title against #3 Unified ranked Michelle Waterson. Penne (10-1) has only one defeat in her career to Zoila Gurgel at 115 pounds. Since then, Penne went on a three fight win streak; winning the initial InvictaFC 105 title over Naho Sugiyama this past October.

Waterson (10-3) is coming off a four fight win streak, going 2-0 in 2012. She defeated Lacey Schukman via decision in a Fight of the Night performance at InvictaFC 3.

The co-main event will feature #4 ranked Barb Honchak (7-2) facing #6 ranked Vanessa Porto (15-5) for the company’s first ever flyweight title. Honchak is on a six fight win streak, with a win over Ais “The Bash” Daly this past October. Porto is coming off an upset win over veteran fighter Tara LaRosa on the same card.

Former Strikeforce champ Sarah Kaufman will also be on the card, with Leslie Smith being rumored as her opponent. Knapp also confirmed InvictaFC 4 main eventer Bec Hyatt, and Invicta 4 debuters Rose Namajunas and Veronica Rothenhausler will be fighting as well.

No word on if this event will attempt another stream or it will be televised.

  1. Will take form another great IFC card …
very nice main and co-main events and some fan favourites like Hyatt and Rothenhausler, if they can put in Calderwood again against a top SW the main card will be really huge …
they must be careful with the date, the UFC has events for 16th March, 13th 20th and 27th April; 6th April should be perfect.

  2. The card will be great, but I think Penne’s just on another level as compared to Waterson. Unless Waterson can make it to a decision and Greg Jackson’s Shiny Baldness Hypnosis Technique works on the judges, then I feel the champ will retain.
