April 2012 Unified Rankings – Dramatic Shifts in Most Divisions

Ronda Rousey

Some major changes in the Unified Rankings this week as upsets and inactivity has saw new fighters ranked and others dropped from the list.

First thing to note is that the Unified rankings this month has changed the names of the smaller divisions. The super-flyweight name has been dropped completely; being replaced by the flyweight division at 125 pounds. Strawweights are now at 115; and the 105 pounders are now called atomweights.

With Strikeforce champion Ronda Rousey’s win over former champion Miesha Tate, Rousey is now #1 in the bantamweight class. Tate has dropped to #3 with Sarah Kaufman talking the #2 spot. Marloes Coenen and Sara McMann take the 4th and 5th spots respectively.

In the flyweight class; Tara LaRosa has dropped off the list due to not having competed in her weight class in a year. Her match this previous weekend was at a catchweight of 127 pounds; which is over the 125 pound weight limit. Rosi Sexton has been inactive for a year and will be re-ranked in June after her match with Aisling Daly in May.

With the two top fighters dropping, Sheila Gaff takes the top spot in the flyweight division for the first time. Cat Zingano takes the #2 spot, with Barb Honchauk, Aisling Daly, and Jessica Eye taking spots #3, #4, and #5. With her victory of Marianna Kheyfets, Munah Holland has jumped to #6.

The strawweight top 5 saw no changes, with Finland’s Katja Kankaanpää jumping into the 6th spot after her upset win over “V.V” Mei Yamaguchi in March.

In the featherweight division, Milena Dudieva and Rin Nakai exchanges places as Dudieva takes the #3 spot and Nakai drops to #4.

With the upcoming InvictaFC card in Kansas City having six matches with ranking implications, we could see more shifts for the May rankings.
