After Amanda Nunes had to withdraw from her match with Sarah Kaufman next week due to a thumb injury, MMA fans will get a rematch of what was “Fight of the Year” nominee last year.
Leslie Smith will get a second shot at Sarah Kaufman at the TUF Nations finale this coming Wednesday, April 16, in Quebec City, Canada. The UFC made the announcement tonight. Kaufman has had both Shayna Baszler and Nunes pull out of the fight due to injury in the past week, with Smith campaigning via twitter to fill the spot.
Kaufman (16-2-1) is coming what was a split decision loss to Jessica Eye, but was turned into a no-contest by the Texas State Athletic commission. Kaufman has wins over UFC title contenders Alexis Davis, Miesha Tate, and Liz Carmouche. In their first match, Kaufman got the unanimous decision over Baszler.
Smith (6-4-1) quickly has become a fan favorite fighter through her stint at Invicta. Smith took veteran Kaitlin Young to a “Fight of the Year” draw in 2012, and would get a win in the rematch. With a win over TUF vet Raquel Pennington, Smith was on her way to possibly getting a UFC contract until her razor thin split decision loss to Kaufman a year ago in what was a contender for “Fight of the Year”.
Since her match with Kaufman, she dropped to flyweight and got a win over Jennifer Maia and a decision loss to InvictaFC champ Barb Honchak.
The match will air on Fox Sports 1.
