The dust has settled from InvictaFC 16 but President Shannon Knapp is right back getting ready for the next event.

Knapp has announced on UFC Fight Pass this past Friday the main event for the 17th installment May 7th in California will feature Tonya Evinger defending her bantamweight title against number 1 contender Colleen Schneider.

Like InvictaFC 16, the next one will be on Univision Deportes as well as UFC Fight Pass. Knapp tells us that the move to the Spanish language network will serve as a test for their product on television. She has gotten great reactions for the Latino and Hispanic communities. We are awaiting the ratings for the debut, but Knapp stated future cards could air live. This past Friday’s offering was tape delayed due to soccer.

The card will also be the start of the flyweight tournament, which will feature the rising stars of division. Knapp told us the fighters who will be participating are still being decided, but it won’t be a one night tournament. The “young guns” in the flyweight division includes Christine Stanley, Rachael Ostovich, Gina Begley, Evva Johnson, Katy Collins, Sijara Eubanks, and Ana Carolina Vidal. Knapp didn’t rule out signing new talent to fill the tournament as well. An official announcement on who will be participating is expected in the coming weeks.

Speaking of flyweights, what is next for the new interim champion Jennifer Maia? The big question lies with the long time champ Barb Honchak. Knapp stated she would be talking to Honchak in the coming weeks to see what she wants to do in the future. There has been talks about Honchak dropping to 115, which would give Roxanne Modafferi or Sarah D’Alelio the next shot at the belt (the promotion is undecided who will get the next shot). If Honchak stays at 125 we can expect her to defend her belt when she returns.

When asked if Honchak would get an immediate title shot at strawweight if she drops in weight, Knapp expresses it isn’t out of the question, but she wouldn’t be surprised if Honchak takes a non-title strawweight fight first to test the waters first.

The soonest we can expect Honchak to return to action is the July event.

Someone we can expect returning to the Invicta cage after a long absence is undefeated featherweight LaToya Walker. Currently at 5-0, Walker defeated Peggy Morgan this past April in Walker’s InvictaFC debut. Her opponent is to be announced. We will have an interview with Walker posted later this week.

The exact location of InvictaFC 17 is yet to be determined, as the promotion have been given several options for May 7th.

InvictaFC 18 is tentatively set for July 1 in Las Vegas, which will kick off International Fight week.  Venue and main event are to be determined.

  1. It’s about time Cyborg fought some high level competition. Not sure who was avoiding who, but she was in the same organizations as Budd and Gomes, the former #2 and #3 contenders, and never fought them. Maybe now would be a good time to set up a match with Walker. Although I don’t give her much of a chance either, hopefully she might be able to make it out of the first round. Even better, how about Cyborg and Evinger at a catch weight of 140?
