OLYMPIC Wrestling RECAP: Japan Continues Dominance; Maroulis Takes first US Gold

Japan took home four golds at the 2016 Olympics, solidifying their position as the best female freestyle wrestling team on the planet.

Now four time Olympic champion Kaori Icho lead the charge, defeating Valeria Koblova of Russia in the finals 3-2 in 58kg finals. Icho dropped in weight from winning gold in 2012, in which she won gold at 63kg.

Taking her place at 63kg was Risako Kawai, who won her first gold shutting out Maryia Mamashuk 6-0 in the finals. Kawai’s celebration went viral (see below).

Eri Tosaka won her first ever Olympic Gold medal by beating Mariya Stadnik of Azerbaijan 3-1 in the 48kg finals. Tosaka helps Japan retain the title as 2012 gold medalist Hitomi Obara retired from the sport.

Sara Dosho rounded out the gold medalists from the “Land of the Rising Sun” taking home the first ever 69kg gold. She defeated Russian Nataliya Vorobyova in a close match. Vorobyova was the 2012 72kg Olympic champion.

Japan would have went 5 for 5 (Japan didn’t have a representative at 75 kg) but Team USA’s Helen Maroulis defeated three time 55kg Olympic champion Saori Yoshida in finals of the 53kg tournament 3-1.

Maroulis is the first U.S. female wrestler to win a gold in wrestling. The Maryland native joins her fellow statesperson Kyle Snyder as the only Americans winning gold in wrestling at the Olympics. She had to wrestle four times to get the gold, having to wrestle into the tournament.

The 75kg Gold went to Canada’s Erica Wiebe, who shut out Guzel Manyurova of Kazakhstan in the finals of the first ever Olympic tournament at this weight.

She joins Tonya Verbeek and Carol Huynh as the only female Canadians to medals in Olympic wrestling, and will look to make Canada a wrestling women’s superpower in 2020 in Tokyo.

Among the countries that took home their first women’s wrestling medals include:

  • India – Sakshi Malik, 58kg bronze
  • Tunisia – Marwa Amri, 58kg bronze
  • Belarus – Maryia Mamashuk 63kg silver
  • Poland – Monika Michalik 63kg
  • Sweden – Jenny Fransson 69kg bronze and Sofia Mattsson 53kg bronze
