Valerie Letourneau: From Bellator Debut to Title Hunt

It took a year for Valerie Letourneau to return to the cage and it wasn’t easy.

The star told us during an interview this past week the airline lost her luggage in her debut for Bellator in Newcastle, England. She took things in stride an was able to get an unanimous decision win over hometown favorite Kate Jackson. She was relieved to have not had much cage rust at all. Having to cut to 125 rather than 115 was also a relief, as she feels stronger and more healthy.

This is important as she has a huge match against Kristina Williams at Bellator 201 June 29th in Temecula, California, which will air on the Paramount Network. The match will be the featured bout on the card.

Letourneau has spent most of her MMA career now at American Top Team with one of the more experienced female MMA teams around. Having such an elite camp is a big reason why she is there. Among her teammates are champion Amanda Nunes and Joanna Jedrzejczyk, plus veterans such as Nina Ansaroiff and Jessica Aguilar. Letourneau’s main training partner has been Gillian Anderson, and has been helping her through her camp.

Her corners this time around will include coaches veterans Matt Brown and Hector Lombard.

When the match against Williams was announced, Letourneau was excited; not because it would be an easy fight, but would be a huge challenge. She told us to can never underestimate young talent, especially coming from a great camp.

The main event of the evening will feature world champion Ilima-Lei Macfarlane taking on Alejandra Lara. Letourneau was unable to give us a prediction, as she knows very little about Lara, but will be watching intently as a win in her fight could gain her a shot at the title.

Letourneau is hoping if the stars align she could have that fight in Canada. Bellator hasn’t been north of the border since Bellator 119 in 2014, and she could make a huge argument for a return if she is victorious.

Wombat Sports will be live all week in Temecula covering Bellator 201. Follow us on twitter and instagram for behind the scenes content.
