Before Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano, there was Christy Martin.
The former boxing world champion broke through into pop culture in the 90’s having been the first female fighter to fight on a major pay-per-view card. It was also the start of audiences accepting women as fighters that has been growing ever since.
Martin’s life was never easy outside the ring either. Netflix released a documentary about her career “Untold: Deal with the Devil” featuring a candid interviews with Martin, former opponents, family, friends, and her former husband, who is in prison for trying to kill her.
We were at the International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame this past August and legendary ring announcer Jake Gutierrez interviewed Martin for us and the Women’s Boxing Achieve Network (WBAN.com).
