With fight week vastly approaching, Invicta and the UFC have announced some events before the two cards commence in L.A.

The first is an open workout at the UFC Gym/Sunergy in Terrance, CA Wednesday.

The other UFC fight week event announced is at 11 a.m. pst Saturday at L.A. Live. The UFC will hold a press conference and fan event for the participants for the next seven events. Expected to be in attendance is Felice Herrig and Jessica Eye.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has suspended Ashlee Evans-Smith for testing positive from the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide after her fight with Raquel Pennington. Smith was fined 30% of her purse and her license is suspended for nine months retroactive from the fight. This means she will be able to return to fighting August 6th if she tests clean before she is re-licensed.

Abshire Courtesy CMT

Congrats to amateur MMA fighter Jackie Abshire, who is the current Steve Austin’s “Broken Skull” Challenge champ. She defeated the “Skull Buster” obstacle course record by three and a half minutes. She won $10,000 and will continue to win $10,000 every episode her time in the extreme obstacle course isn’t broken.

England’s Helen Harper has signed with the PXC.

The undefeated fighter will take on Cortney Casey in her promotional debut March 13th in Guam. Harper has finished in all of her wins, and had trained in Thailand for several years in Muay Thai.

Casey (3-1) is coming off back to back finishes.

The fight will stream on the PXC website March 13th.

Artemis Film Festival to Spotlight Women’s Fight Documentaries & Films

 

There has been many films that have covered female fighting in one form of another for the past fifty years; from documentaries to major motion pictures.

The new millennium and the increase of female participation in combat sports has saw growth in to many of these stories being told.

The Artemis Film Festival is looking to highlight these stories as they are currently working their first event for April 2015.

They have started an Indie Go Go campaign to help get the event going.

We talked to the organizers Sean Newcombe and Melanie Wise about their inspiration for the festival and how women’s combat sports have been a big part of it.

Wombat Sports: How did the idea of the Artemis Film Festival come about?

Artemis Film Festival: The idea came about through inspiration, really. We have all been devoted to female action films from the standpoint of the sheer joy we have for physically strong female characters, but also from the standpoint of our passion for having a positive effect on the image of women in film and culture. We’ve all been completely focused on writing and creating female action films. We thought that having a film festival focused on female action heroes would allow for people who share our passion for strong female characters to celebrate this genre. We also felt it would be an opportunity to spotlight the power of women in our culture.

We wanted the festival to be a place where the legions of fans who love female action heroes could go and enjoy a array of great films in one place and at one time. (Female action films are a $3 billion industry, so this is not a niche.) The fact that such a festival had never been done before boggled our minds.

By showcasing such films, we could also draw attention to women as heroes, fighters and leaders, rather than as long-suffering wives, dutiful assistants and victims. We hope that we could help change the narrative of how women are portrayed in film.

Lastly, film often reflects and influences how we see ourselves, and celebrating these films, we hope, will help positively influence how women and girls perceive their power and status in culture.

Wombat: Can you tell us about the festival?

Artimis: We plan to show both classic female action films such as “Aliens” and “Kill Bill” and also showcase new films by unknown filmmakers in our festival competition. We want to be a venue that encourages new and unknown filmmakers to make female action films. If there’s an outlet for such films, they are more likely to be made.

We are also going to have an awards ceremony for films in competition and give awards to the women who are both pioneers and stars in female action films made by Hollywood. We have sent many invites to well-known female action stars and expect to hear from them soon. Also, we want to honor stuntwomen, athletes (women’s mma, of course) and female first-responders, such as military women.

W.S.: The culture has shifted in both entertainment and sports in term of female roles. What are you thoughts about the societal change?

AFF: There’s has been a shift in reality, in our everyday lives, but there has not necessarily been a shift in how that reality is portrayed in the media. While Hollywood has recently realized the power of the female action film market, they’ve been slow to broaden their portrayals of women to reflect the dynamism and power that can be seen in women in every aspect of our culture. We hope that our festival will help prod a faster shift to not only more roles for women in film (right now less than one out of every three speaking characters in a Hollywood movie, on average, is female), but to stronger, better roles for women.

W.S.: What kind of reaction have you seen among the female fight community?

AFF: The response from women, generally, has been extraordinary! The women we’ve heard from both in social media and in daily life has been completely positive, passionate and vocal.

With respect to the women’s mma community, we have not heard a lot, unfortunately. We’d love to hear more from them because we are huge supporters of womens mma! We love the sport and we’d love to celebrate it at our festival. Women’s mma is at the forefront of positively shifting societal images of female physical power. (Invicta FC and Tuf 20 are just two examples of that positive shift.) We want to honor that.

W.S.: You have an indie go-go started to make this event happen. What benefits can people expect for supporting the festival?

AFF: They can expect to see a festival which will properly honors the female action genre in a manner it deserves. We’d like our festival to have as broad a reach as possible so that we can include as many of the great films and as many of the women who are part of this cultural gender shift as possible.

Our crowdfunding is intended to allow us to show more classic films, more films from new, unknown filmmakers in the competition and offer a chance to honor the kind of women we mentioned above. We’d also like to make sure that the experience of the people who attend the festival is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

By crowdfunding we feel that we can offer a broader, bolder festival.

W.S.: Anything you want to add?

AFF: We want this festival to be fun, but we also want to open minds. The empowerment of women is at the center of what this festival is about. It’s the soul of it, in fact.

Help us Create a New Wombat Sports

As I explained in my open letter, I am looking to change Wombat Sports to what it was initially meant to be. I can’t do this on my own, and that;s where you come in.

We are looking for contributors to help with writing articles and covering certain combat sports. You would also get to interview talented athletes in those sports.

The main contributors we are looking for is in women’s boxing, Muay Thai, freestyle wrestling, and BJJ. (We already have some people interested in covering the WMMA portion of the site). The cool things is I have the tools to gain news and info for these sports, just not the time to write it up. You can “learn on the job” if you aren’t an expert on these topics; but being curious is the key thing.

Weekend Results: Pennington Finishes Smith; Werner and Mucino Earn Boxing Titles

Pro MMA

After a nine month absence, Raquel Pennington (5-4) came back to the octagon and handed Ashlee Evans-Smith her first pro loss at UFC 181 in Las Vegas, NV.

Smith used her wrestling to control the majority of the round, opening a gash in the middle of Pennington’s forehead. Towards the end of the round, Pennington landed a takedown and as Smith was standing up, Pennington took the back and was able to get the bulldog headlock on Smith. Pennington used it to choke out Smith and Smith was out right before the bell rang to end round 1. The ref stopped the fight.

Pennington gets back on the winning track after a close decision loss to Jessica Andrade.

MMA Super Heroes ended the year with three female bouts in São Paulo, Brazil.

Tournament champion Renata Baldan recovered from her first pro loss by defeating Luciana Treze by unanimous decision. Baldan improves to 4-1.

Mariana Leonardo gains her 4th by defeating Karina Santana de Oliveira by TKO round 1 after Oliveira ends it inbetween rounds.

In an amateur atomweight bout, Solange Tirolli defeated Adriana Curtz by TKO in round 2.

Bantamweight prospect Jessica Zomchik earned her second professional 1st round armbar, this time defeating Stacey Sigala at Gladiators of the Cage in Pittsburgh, PA.

In two amateur bouts on the card, Jena Baldwin defeated Jamie Driver by split decision and Melissa Gasdick defeated Sarah Click by disuqalifcation after an illegal head kick round 2.

Nicole Wesner earned he first world titles in spectacular fashion this past weekend in Vienna, Austria with a knockout over Gina Chamie in round 3. With the win, Wesner wins the vacant WIBF and vacant WBF lightweight titles.

Wesner remains undefeated at 9-0.

Arely Mucino earns her second world title defeating Shindo Go by unanimous decision to win the WBC World flyweight title in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. Mucino was the former interim WBA flyweight champion.

Mucino (21-2-2; 1 NC) increases her undefeated streak to seven.

Jackie Nava successfully defended her WBC and WBA super bantamweight title, getting an unanimous decision over Sayda Mosquera in Sonora, Mexico.

Nava (31-4-3) had defended her WBA title for the fifth time and her WBC title for the second. Her win streak continues at seven.

In a heavyweight rematch Sonya Lamonakis defeated Carlette Ewell by split decision to win the vacant IBO World heavyweight title in Philipsburg, Sint Maarten.

The two went to a draw in 2012 and this match was so close, we won’t be surprised if we see a trilogy match.

EBU female super bantamweight champion Karine Rinaldo improves her win streak to eight, defeating Nevenka Mikulic by unanimous decision in Corse-du-Sud, France.

“Fight Like a Girl ” Documentary Tells Tales of Overcoming Struggles

There is never a singular reason to pursue boxing and not one mindset to train in it.

This is one of the many lessons from Jill Morley’s award winning documentary “Fight Like a Girl”, which saw it’s major release to most formats this week. The movie follow Morely beginning her journey into the sport and the many female pugilists she encounters along the way. Among them, a boxer looking to snap a losing streak (Kim Tomes), one on the rise in the sport but fighting ageism (Susan Merlucci), and an undefeated pro recovering from mental stumbling blocks as she seeks gold (Maureen Shea).

Morely’s story of abuse and depression is the main focus of the movie, which proves fighting is not only a physical game but a mental one as well. Each fighter including Morely must not only fight opponents and fatigue; they also must overcome doubt, heartbreak, and past traumas.

Morely’s look into the lives of these female fighters give you a great insight into how a mind of a fighter works. Anyone, male or female, can relate to a person featured in the documentary, and it’s well worth a watch.

Justino

Cyborg Justino has given up on going to 135 for now.

The InvictaFC featherweight stated to MMA Fighting her injury has delayed the cut and she is questioning if she can even make 135.

The plan is for Justino to defend her 145 title at InvictaFC’s 11th event in February. We are expecting an announcement Friday night during InvictaFC 10 on the location and opponent.

On Wednesday’s episode of TUF 20, two fighters advanced to set the semi-finals.

Former InvictaFC champion Carla Esparza defeated Tecia Torres in a grudge match. Esparza’s wrestling is what gave her the edge in the majority decision win. Esparza will face another former InvictaFC champion in Jessica Penne in the semi-finals.

The other semi-final saw Rose Namajunas submit Joanne Calderwood by kimura. Namajunas used her bjj skills to attack Calderwood. Calderwood tried to make up ground with strikes in round two, but Namajunas was able to get the kimura on the ground to get tap. This was the first time Calderwood was submitted in an MMA competition. Namajunas will face Randa Markos in the semi-finals.

On Saturday, undefeated Ashlee Evans-Smith will make her UFC debut taking on Raquel Pennington in Las Vegas. Both Smith (135.5) and Pennington (136) made weight.

Smith (3-0) won the CSA featherweight tournament last year and soon signed to the World Series of Fighting. She got the TKO over Marciea Allen in June and was waiting for another fight. She was released from the WSOF just as the UFC offer came around.

TUF 18 vet Pennington (4-4) is coming off a close loss to Jessica Andrade this past March. Pennington won her official UFC debut with a decision over Roxanne Modafferi.

The fight will kick off the UFC televised prelims on Fox Sports 1.

Pound for pound queen Cecilia Braekhus will defend her four titles this weekend in Frederiksberg, Denmark.

The 26-0 WBA/WBO/WBC/IBF World welterweight champion will take on #1 contender Jennifer Retzke.

Retzke (15-1-1) has only lost once in the past 4 years. She is the current IBO welterweight champion, but will not be defending her title.

Both Brækhus (64.6 kg) and Retzke (66 kg) made weight.

Also on the card,  Klara Svensson will defend her  interim WBC World light welterweight title against Lucia Morelli.

USA’s takes 2 Titles at AIBA Championship; Ireland’s Taylor Ties Record

This past week saw some of the world’s best amateur boxers try to gain gold at the AIBA Championships in Jeju, South Korea.

Olympic gold medalist and Team USA’s Claressa Shields took the AIBA Elite title for the first time. Shields would defeat China’s Li Qian in the 75 kg finals 3-0.

Shield’s Teammate and Olympic bronze medalist Marlen Esparza would also claim her first AIBA title, defeating England’s Lisa Whiteside in the 51 kg final 2-1.

The major story surrounds Ireland’s Katie Taylor. The Olympic gold medalist has tied India’s Mary Kom for most AIBA World titles with 5. Taylor would defeat Yana Alexeyevna of Kazakhstan in the 60 kg finals.

Russia would take the team title with two gold medliats, one silver, and a bronze. Team USA would win a silver to take home three medals above their two golds. Also winning 3 medals where China (1 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze), Italy (1 silver; 2 bronze), and Turkey (3 bronze).

This was the first time Herrig has been submitted in her MMA career. Markos will face the winner of the Rose Namajunas versus Joanne Calderwood match.

Next Wednesday, Jessica Penne and Aisling Daly will square off in the second quarterfinal

Doctors are estimating 50 days for Leslie Smith’s ear to heal enough to get back in the gym.

Montana’s Fight Force MMA announced a match between local fighter Ariel Beck and MMA vet Angela Hayes December 6.

Beck is coming off a loss in her pro debut to Emily Corso. The boxer is looking to show some of her improved ground game against Hayes (6-7) who also comes from a boxing background. Hayes lost to Holly Holm last year, and has been the only fighter to take Holm the distance.

No word on if this will be streamed.

Rumors

Roxanne Modafferi and Vanessa Porto was suspected to be a number 1 contenders match, but Shannon Knapp told CSS Radio this wasn’t the case.

Knapp has yet to decide who will face champion Barb Honchak next, but Modafferi or the winner of the Jennifer Maia and DeAnna Bennett match seems to be the best candidates. Knapp doesn’t want to throw Andrea Lee too deep into the pool as of yet.

Scheduled Fights

InvictaFC vet  Paige VanZant will make her long awaited octagon debut against PXC vet Kailin Curran at UFC Fight Night in Austin, TX. Their match will stream on UFC Fight Pass Saturday. Both Curran (115.8) and VanZant (114.8) made weight.

VanZant (3-1) is coming off a submission win over Courtney Himes last year, and her only loss was to Tecia Torres. Curran has notable wins over Emi Tomimatsu and Kaiyana Rain.

After a two year absence, Molly Helsel will return to action.

The journeywoman fighter has found a home in Tucson, AZ and will compete there for the for WFF promotion against  Lori Agins. Both fighters came in at 136.5.

Helsel is looking for a comeback after several fight of the night performances against some of the toughest fighters on the planet. Agins would get some recognition with a win over Helsel.

In an amateur bout, Tracy Cortez will face Arianne Christiansen.

Weekend Results: Eye Defeats Smith; Aguilar Retains & Kianzad Gains a Title

Jessica Eye looked impressive in her win against a very game Leslie Smith at UFC 180 in Mexico City, Mexico, which aired live on Fox Sports 1.

Eye’s striking proved to be the factor in the fight, as Eye damaged Smith’s ear. After the first round, the doctor looked at the ear and let it go on. In round two after a heated striking exchange, the referee paused the fight and the doctor declared the damage to the ear was too much to continue, much to the dismay of Smith. Officially, Eye defeated Smith by TKO at 1:30 of  round 2.

Eye improves to 11-2-1.

The top strawweight on the planet has defended her title and position in the rankings.

Jessica Aguilar took Kalindra Faria to a unanimous decision win at WSOF 15 in Tampa, FL which aired on NBC Sports Net.

Faria hung in the pocket with the champ, but was out classed by Aguilar’s precision striking. The final round saw Faria push for the win, but it was too little too late.

Aguilar hands Faria her first loss in 11 fights and improves to 19-4.

Cage Warriors has crowned its first bantamweight champion.

Undefeated Pannie Kianzad (7-0) defeated last minute replacement Eeva Siiskonen by unanimous decision to win the initial 135 title in London, England. Siiskonen, who took the fight on 10 days notice, was able to get a tight armbar attempt in the opening stanza, but the striking was the key throughout the rest of the match to give Kianzad the win.

It is expected Kianzad first title defense will be against the fighter Siiskonen replaced, Agnieszka Niedzwiedz, next year.

In a preliminary bout, Anna Elmose defeated Emma Delaney by TKO 0:19 round 1.

MMA Super Heroes returned to action as they crowned a strawweight tournament champion.

Virna Jandiroba submitted Camila Lima by rear naked choke in round 2 in what was the tournament final.

Marília Santos came in over weight for the tournament and and faced Aline Sattelmayer. If Sattelmayer would have won, she would have advanced. However, Santos won by unanimous decision but would not advance due to the weight discrepancy.

In a non-tourmanet match, Daiane Firmino defeated Ariane Lipski by TKO round 1.

After losing to Randa Markos, Tecia Torres advanced to the quarterfinals of “The Ultimate Fighter 20” tournament by defeating Bec Rawlings by unanimous decision. Torres will face former InvictaFC champion Carla Esparza in the next round.

The episode itself drew 578,000 live viewers – one of the best ratings of the season. Wednesday’s broadcast saw the most drama and cattiness of the episodes thus far.

Texas’s Tessa Simpson signed this past week. The 3-1 atomweight returned to action last year with a win over Paulina Granados.

German strawweight Daniela Kortmann signed Thursday to the promotion, The first from Germany yo be signed, she went 3-1 as an amateur and won her pro debut in 2012.

World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo told us during the WSOF conference call Thursday to expect more expansion of the women’s division in 2015. Sefo stated “timing” had a lot to do with not doing it this year. (We can only assume he meant TUF 20.)

He also is looking to develop a bantamweight division.

However, XFC is not too pleased with Kalindra Faria signing to the promotion.

XFC has filed a lawsuit against WSOF in the US over the Brazilian strawweight. Faria had signed an exclusive contract with the XFC before signing to WSOF. Faria will face WSOF champion Jessica Aguilar Saturday. More on that below.

The UFC will make it’s debut in Mexico City, Mexico with a much anticipated scrap in the bantamweight division.

Jessica Eye (10-2; 1NC) and Leslie Smith (7-5-1) look to make their way up the 135 division rankings as they will be the featured bout on the UFC prelims on Fox Sports 1 Saturday. Both tipped the scales at 134.

Eye is coming off a loss to Alexis Davis, while Smith is coming off a win over Jessamyn Duke. Both seem acclimated to the higher altitude and look to entertain the fans in Mexico.

The #1 ranked Jessica Aguilar will defend her WSOF title for the second time against the #8 ranked  Kalindra Faria in Tampa, FL Saturday, which will air on NBC Sports Net. Both Aguilar (115) and Faria (114.8) came in on weight.

Aguilar has won 9 straight including her title win over Alida Gray and her title defense over Emi Fujino. With The Ultimate Fighter 20 almost ready to crown a champion, Aguilar need a solid win the stay at the top.

Faria is riding an 11 fight win streak and is looking to make an instant impact at 115. She has finished in 5 of her last 11 wins and is ranked in both the flyweight and strawweight divisions.

Cage Warriors will crown its first women’s bantamweight champion in London, England Saturday, in a fight that will stream on MMAJunkie.com.

Sweden’s Pannie Kianzad and Finland’s Eeva Siiskonen will duke it out for initial 135 title. Both Kianzad (134.8) and Siiskonen (134.3) came in on weight.

Kainzad (6-0) is undefeated having finished Megan van Houtum in her CWFC debut. This will be the debut of Siiskonen  in the promotion, having two finishes t her credit.

Women’s Boxing Results: Persoon Retains WBC title; Two Heavyweight Champs crowned

Delfine Persoon successfully defend her newly won WBC World lightweight title getting the 9th round TKO over Diana Prazak in West-Vlaanderen, Belgium Tuesday.

Persoon (31-1) racks up her 14th finish of her career, and improves her winning streak to 21. She is also the WIBF and WBF lightweight champion.

Martha Salazar has gained another World Heavyweight title. Salazar defeated Tanzee Daniel by unanimous decision in San Francisco, California this past weekend. Salazar (13-4) is the former WIBF heavyweight champion.

Another heavyweight champion was crowned in Broadbeach, Queensland, Australia.

Lisa Marie Vizaniari defeated Kathy Rivers by TKO round 10 to win the vacant WIBA World heavyweight title. Vizaniari  (8-0) is currently the WBF heavyweight champion.

In Lincoln, Rhode Island, WIBA super bantamweight champion Shelly Vincent gains a second title with her majority decsion win over Jackie Trivilino. Vincent is now the UBF World super bantamweight title, and remains undefeated.

Long time WBA World female flyweight champion Susi Kentikian got the unanimous decsion win over Naoko Fujioka by unanimous decision to retain her title in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. She extends her win streak to 5.

Anabel Ortiz defended her WBA World minimumweight title successfully for the third time with a split decsion win over Etsuko Tada in Queretaro, Mexico. Ortiz has won six straight.

Also on the card, Alondra Garcia and Eloisa Martinez fought to a draw to a draw.
