Jessica Aguilar vs. Carla Esparza Tears up Bellator 46

On paper it was going to be a barn burner, and Jessica Aguilar (in Black) and Carla Esparza (in black and pink) didn’t disappoint.

The two slugged it out, took it to the mat, and everywhere in between at Bellator 46  at the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, FL Saturday night. At weigh-ins these two were friendly, but once the cage door shut, it was all business. Takedowns, low kicks, and boxing combos from both fighters kept the action heated in what was called a war by many on hand to see it.

With Aguilar’s hometown crowd behind her, JAG took a split decision victory over Esparza 30-27,28-29, 30-27. Aguilar goes to 11-4 and Esparza 5-2.

According to Gal’s Guide to MMA, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney stated that the fight will either be posted online this week or aired at the next event. Rebney also stated that he was still undecided about the women’s 125 pound tournament for the fall; despite the fact he just signed top 125 pound Jessica Eye a few weeks ago.  He is also talking to a few more fighters in the division to join Bellator’s 125 pound ranks. (You got to think Roxanne Modafferi and Cat Zinagno are on that list, but that is speculation at this time.)

No female matches are scheduled as of yet for the rest of the summer season, but there is a rumor that Eye will be making her Bellator debut at Bellator 48’s card at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. on Aug. 20.

Post Fight Video & Photos – Julia Budd Grounds out Win over Germaine de Randamie at Strikeforce

Photos Courtesy Ester Lin/Strikeforce

The best way to avoid not getting knocked out – take your opponent to the ground. That was the lesson we learned last night.

Julia Budd defeated Germaine de Randamie via unanimous decision this past Friday at Strikeforce Challenegers 16 in Kent, WA.

Budd was coming off a devastating 14 second KO by Amanda Nunes and had been KO’ed by de Randamie before in kickboxing, so the now 2-1 MMA fighter decided she wasn’t going let that happen again; by out wrestling the Hollander, taking her down and keeping her on the mat for most of the 15 minutes.

Not to say that Budd came out of the match unmarked. In the third round, Randamie was able to land punches and knees to Budd taking the third round on points, but it wasn’t enough.  Budds wins via decision with 29-28 on all three score cards.

Budd did a post fighter interview with Strikeforce.com about her victory.

Elaina Maxwell and Angela Samaro Signed for King of the Cage in July

As the hot July summer gets loaded with female MMA matches, King of the Cage brings you what could be a barn burner.

Elaina Maxwell (5-4) will face the prospect Angela Samaro (3-1) at King of the Cage Shockwave July 23 at the Gold Country Casino in Oroville, CA just north of Sacramento.

Maxwell is coming off a decision win over Shana Olsen and looks to gain some momentum to generate some more marks in the win column. She holds a victory over newly signed Strikeforce fighter Alexis Davis.

Since her loss to top ranked Cat Zinagno in 2009, Samaro has finished her last two fights in the first frame, and is coming back to the cage after a year absence.

Tickets are available online at KingoftheCage.com and at the Gold Country Casino.

Germaine de Randamie & Julia Budd Ready to Go for Strikeforce Challengers

The first female fight under the Zuffa banner is set for Friday night.

Germaine de Randamie (145) and Julia Budd (145.5) were on weight for their match at Strikeforce Challengers Friday night in Kent, WA.

This is a rematch of sorts, as Randamie TKOed Budd in a kickboxing match in 2008. Since then, Budd wanted a rematch, and Randamie was more than willing to accept.

The winner of this match could have a strong argument as a challenger to Cyborg Santos’s 145 pound title.

Strikeforce Challengers will be live on Showtime Friday night.
