Australia will be getting a second major women’s title match for the UFC’s stadium show in Melbourne, Australia.
Dana White confirmed Friday that Joanna Jedrzejczyk will defend her strawweight title against Valerie Letourneau at UFC 193 on November 15th. The fight will serve as the co-main event to the bantamweight title fight between champion Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm.
Jedrzejczyk (10-0) would the title earlier this year and defeated Jessica Penne by TKO in her first title defense. The champ was sidelined due to a hand injury the past few months. It was expected the champ would face Claudia Gadleha in a rematch of their 2014 outing, but Gadleha is still sidelined with a hand injury of her own.
Letourneau (8-3) is undefeated in the UFC and is 2-0 at strawweight. She defeated Maryna Moroz last month, giving the Ukrainian her first ever loss.
Due to Alexander Gustafsson being out of his match with Glover Teixeira as the main event of the UFC’s June 20th event in Berlin, Germany, a new main event is booked as Joanna Jedrzejczyk will defend her newly won 115 title against former InvictaFC atomweight champ Jessica Penne. The news came out Friday.
Jedrzejczyk (9-0) TKOed Carla Esparza to win the belt on March. Much speculation was around who was going to be the champion’s next challenger as several has tossed their hat in the cage.
Former InvictaFC champ Penne (12-2) was set to face Juliana Lima at UFC Fight Night 67 in a few weeks, but got the call she has been waiting for. Her only two losses were to Zoila Frausto and newly signed UFC fighter Michelle Waterson. Since her loss to Waterson, she has won back to back fights, including a Fight of the Night performance against Randa Markos.
In what has become a talent filled division over multiple organizations, one strawweight got the edge over the rest. UFC title contender Joanna Jedrzejczyk takes the WMMA Press Award “Strawweight of the Year” for 2014.
In what was an active month in the rankings, movement happened due to losses, inactivity, and fighters dropping in weight.
With her loss to UFC champion Ronda Rousey, Alexis Davis has dropped from the #2 slot to #5 in the bantamweight division. This moves Cat Zingano to the #2 position and Sarah Kaufman to #3. Tate goes to the #4.
With Joanna Jedrzejczyk move to the strawweight division, the bottom six positions from July’s flyweight rankings moved up a spot. InvictaFC fighter Alexa Grasso enters the list at #10.
With her UFC debut win, Caludia Gahdela took the #2 spot on the strawweight rankings, pushing Carla Esparza to #2. With the announcement of Ayaka Hamsaki moving to atomweight and not having fought at 115 in a year, she has dropped off the list. This pushed Tecia Torres (now #6), Mizuki Inoue (now #7) and Kalindra Faria (now #8) up a spot from last month. The a fore mentioned Jedrzejczyk, with her win over Juliana Lima, debuts at #9 in the 115 division.
Jessica Penne leaves the atomweight list due to inactivity, pushing everyone from #3 to #10 in July up a spot. Amy Davis re-enters the top 10.
With her win over Rosi Sexton at Cage Warriors, Joanna Jedrzejczyk moves from #5 to #4 in the flyweight rankungs this month. With Jedrzejczyk now signed to the UFC, she will most likely drop off the list next month as she will be dropping to strawweight.Julia Berezikova is off the list due to inactivity. The pushes spots 7-10 from June up a spot, with Viviane Pereira entering the list at #10.
At featherweight, Ashlee Evans-Smith has dropped off the list due to due dropping to 135 in her fight this past month. Latoya Walker moves up to #9 and Kate Da Silva enters the list at #10.
The rest of the divisions stay pat in the top 10.
We are expecting major changes in August as some fighters haven’t fought in a year and several fighters changing weight divisions for TUF 20.
Coming off a huge win over Rosi Sexton, Joanna Jedrzejczyk has signed to the UFC.
The Polish prospect will take on Brazilian Juliana Lima in what will be the second strawweight fight in the promotion at UFC on Fox 12 card in San Jose, CA July 26. MMA Rocks Poland broke the news Monday.
Undefeated Jedrzejczyk (6-0) got the KO over Sexton at Cage Warriors a few weeks ago. She has defeated some of the best talent in Europe. She had signed to Invicta earlier this year, but it looks like the UFC may have bought out her contract. This will be Jedrzejczyk’s debut at strawweight.
Lima (6-1) is coming off a win over Liliani Trolezi in Brazil last October before being signed to the UFC this past December. She was set to fight at TUF 20 but since she doesn’t speak English too well, they decided to sign her directly to the promotion. Her only loss was by decision to Katja Kankaanpaa in Invicta.
The fight is expected to air on the UFC on Fox prelims, which will air on Fox Sports 1 July 26.
After taking a break from MMA, Rosi Sexton is ready to get back in the game on her home turf.
The former UFC fighter will take on undefeated Polish flyweight and InvictaFC signee Joanna Jedrzejczyk at Cage Warriors 69 in London, England June 7th. The promotion announced the fight Thursday.
Sexton (13-4) was one of the top flyweights in the world before going up to 135 when she signed to the UFC. She lost back to back decisions to UFC title contender Alexis Davis and Jessica Andrade respectfully before being let go. Sexton was on a three fight win streak before signing to the UFC. Sexton will drop back to 125 for the fight, and is undefeated under the Cage Warriors banner.
Jedrzejczyk (5-0) is coming off a win over Karla Benitez only a few weeks ago. The Polish fight has yet to taste defeat with two finishes to her credit.
