Hamasaki

DEEP-JEWELS has announced their next card. The promotion’s 5th event will take place August 9th in Tokyo. The news was broke for the US audience by the CJ Report.

No matches were announced, but will mark the return of 115 champion Ayaka Hamsaki. Hamasaki had surgery on her knee after her last fight, a loss to current UFC signee Claudia Gadelha at Invicta last July. It is susepcted Hamasaki will be defending her D-J title against either 115 tournament winner Emi Tomimatsu or InvictaFC vet Mizuki Inoue. Both are set to fight on the card.

The matches are expected to stream on their UStream for $15.

Julie Kedzie is moving to Kansas City to fulfill her role as a full time matchmaker, commentator, and consultant for Invicta. With the move, she leaves her long time home of Albuquerque and her coaching and mentoring job at Jackson’s MMA. In the eight years at Jackson’s, she started one of the most recognized and accomplished female MMA teams in the country.

We look forward to her continuing efforts to improve and expand Invicta and it’s roster.

Interesting state we were discussing on twitter this week. Currently Invicta’s women’s divisions has more countries represent than the UFC’s women’s division.

  • Invicta (10): USA, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Netherlands, Finland, and Poland
  • UFC (8): USA, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Scotland, Russia, Netherlands, and Finland

The UFC number could increase by two countries if Helena Harper (England) and Ais “The Bash” Daly (Ireland) is added to TUF 20.

Jessica Aguilar stated during a conference call for the World Series of Fighting 10 that she is being paid on par with the male champions under contract with the promotion. She has two more fights on her contract, including her upcoming title fight with Emi Fujino June 21 in Vegas, which will air on NBS Sports Net. She express she is going to “see what happens” after the contract expires to decide to stay with WSOF or look for other offers.

Aguilar has been doing vlogs to chronicle her training and life coming up to her defending her belt. You can watch them here.

Michelle Ould and Zolia Frausto have buried the hatchet. The two head a heated war of words in 2010 and was one of the most heated rivalries in WMMA. Four years later, tempers have mellowed and the two told us that hostilities are over.

Gadelha and Lahdemaki to Kick off UFC Strawweight Division in July

Gadelha
Gadelha
Lahdemaki
Lahdemaki

As expected, #3 Unified ranked starwweight Claudia Gadelha won’t have to wait until after TUF 20 to make her octagon debut.

The InvictaFC vet will make history as one of the first female strawweights to step into a UFC cage as she will face Finnish fighter Tina Lahdemaki at UFC Fight Night July 16th in Atlantic City, NJ.

Gadelha (11-0) defeated Japanese superstar Ayaka Hamsaki a year ago at Invicta, handing the former JEWELS champion her first loss. She also has wins over InvictaFC signee Herica Tiburcio and UFC bantamweight Valerie Letourneau. Gadelha was supposed to face former InvictaFC champion Carla Esparza for the title last December, but a bacterial infection sidelined her the day of the fight. She also was to take part on the Ultimate Fighter 20, but since she could not consistently make weight for the six week taping of the show, she was signed to the main roister immediately.

Lahdemaki (5-0) will be dropping to 115 from 125 for the fight. In her last fight this past fall, she choked out Karla Benitez to the win. This will be her first fight outside of her native Finland.

The match joins Jessamyn Duke versus Leslie Smith on the card.

The event will air July 16 on Fox Sports 1.

We are asking amateur fighters to please check out our results page here and check to see if we are missing fights. As much as we try, sometimes promoters don’t get results to the major databases.

Rumors

A Brazilian website is reporting the World Series of Fight is looking to book Cyborg Justino versus Holly Holm for sometime next year.

Justino is currently sign with Invicta, and she is at the end of her contract after her next match. InvictaFC president Shannon Knapp has told us that Justino will defend her 145 title against India Gomes in June.

As of now, Justino’s management has stated they are not interested in signing with the WSOF anytime soon.

Speaking of Invicta, Knapp is expected to make an announcement next week about the June event and a possible tv deal.

Should be noted the Fox and the UFC not only recognized InvictaFC in their graphics and commentary Wednesday, but they also used Invicta footage to pump up the fight between Sarah Kaufman and Leslie Smith. UFC and Fox never does this…

According to Dana White, Ronda Rousey requested to defend her title on the July 5th card. White noted that Cat Zingano was still dealing with “personal issues” and was the reason she wasn’t available. Miesha Tate stated this week she is picking Rousey to win over challenger Alexis Davis. Liz Carmouche refused to pick.

White also mentioned he is working on getting the Strikeforce fights on Fightpass. Due to a provision in their Strikeforce deal with Showtime, they aren’t allowed to air the complete fights anywhere. They would also need to edit sponsors out of the fights.

Julianna Pena Talks Rehab; Return to the Cage

pena static tuf 01It was been a few months since Julianna Pena injured her knee during training for her next UFC fight. Although there have been stories back and forth about what happened, the “Venezuelan Vixen” seems to have taken the injury in stride and is working her way back to get to her next octagon appearance.

We caught up with Pena after cornering one of her teammates at Intense Cage Fighting’s event this past weekend.

Wombat Sports: How is the knee and rehab going?

Julianna Pena: Rehab is going great. I am doing it three times a week and it’s getting better every day.

Wombat: Are you still living with your parents while you are recovering?

Pena: I am not.

W.S.: Can you tell us a little about the accident and are you still training with the same team?

J.P.: You take a risk every time you train, and I got into a terrible wrestling accident. It happens. I am still with the same team and not going anywhere.

W.S.: What’s the timeline on the knee?

J.P.: A definite year.

W.S.: You are probably a bit anxious about getting back into the octagon…

J.P.: I am definitely being realistic about the situation and I don’t want to put the cart before the horse.

W.S.: Miesha Tate is currently at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. Any plans on going down to train with her before your next UFC fight?

J.P.: I have been offered to go down there and train and I am definitely going to take the advantage of that when the time comes. Right now my main focus is getting my knee and myself 100% health and we’ll talk training camps when that time comes.

W.S.: You have a great training partner in Elizabeth Phillips who is coming off a win. Tell us a little about her.

J.P.: Elizabeth is doing great. She is an animal and everyone needs to look out for her because she is going to hit the scene big in 2014.

W.S.: How has it been since the TUF house? Have you been recognized more?

J.P.: I have been offered to do shows and all sorts of events. Everything has been great since “The Ultimate Fighter” and was blessed to be a part of the show on a high caliber stage.

W.S.: Does UFC president Dana White stay in contact with you at all?

J.P.: I talk to him every so often. I am going to Vegas to have dinner with him in May when I go to see UFC 173.

W.S.: They just announced Ronda Rousey versus Alexis Davis. Any predictions?

J.P.: Who cares? Whoever has the belt I want it.
