Miesha Tate Honored as WMMA Press “Might Mia” Award

Every year the WMMA Press Awards committee honors a fighter, past or present, with the “Might Mia” Inspirational Fighter Award.  The award is dedicated to “Mighty” Mia Hayes, a MMA fighter who battled breast cancer while still training and raising a growing family of foster kids. We lost Mia in 2011.

Amanda Nunes – 2016 WMMA Press Fighter of the Year

For the 3rd straight year, a bantamweight has taken home the WMMA Press “Fighter of the Year”.

UFC champion Amanda Nunes take the top honor after a Hall of Fame year.

UFC & V-MODA Take WMMA Press 2016 Promotion & Sponsor Awards Respectively

The UFC has repeated as WMMA Press Promotion of the Year, as V-Moda picks up its first award for Sponsor.

Aleksandra Toncheva wins WMMA Press Amateur of the Year

The IMMAF World and European strawweight champion eared another honor.

Bulgaria’s Aleksandra Toncheva takes on the WMMA Press Award for Amateur fo the Year.

The awards are voted on by the WMMA Press committee, a set of journalists that have covered the female divisions of martial arts for years on may different levels.

Six journalists who voted on the award:

Toncheva (8-0) finished in all of her wins in 2016, and became a 2 time European champion for the IMMAF after aging her first World championship. This awards shiws how the female fighting world is expanding in its reach wit the help of the IMMAF. This is the third year in a row an IMMAF champion has won the award.

“Thank you everyone about the recognition!,” Toncheva told us after accepting the award. “I am very excited! Hope more women will compete and feel the beauty of this lovely sport of MMA.”

Toncheva will be making her pro debut at Rizin’s April 16th.

2016 WMMA Press Nominees for Promotion of the Year

The demand for female fights have grown.

More than 700 fights happened in the pro women’s divisions alone in 2016. Five Promotions were ahead of the curve and are nominated for this year’s award.

The WMMA Press committee is a set of journalists that have covered the female divisions of martial arts for years on may different levels.

Six journalists will vote on the award:

This is the 7th year for the awards which sees the best in female fighting recognized.
